Synthetic vs. Regular Oil

by Mike Romeo

A synthetic oil change can cost you almost double what a standard oil change would. So why would anyone want to spend that extra money?

There are numerous facts as to why synthetic oil is overall better for your vehicle then regular oil. The first and most important is the ability of synthetic oil to handle extreme heat. As your vehicle reaches and maintains operating temperature it’s the responsibility of your oil to keep the moving engine parts lubricated. If there is insufficient lubrication then your engine will start to seize. The ability to handle the extreme heat produced by your engine also allows synthetic oil to increase the life of your engine. If you plan on keeping your vehicle for an extended time period then it’s definitely in your best interest to go with synthetic. It’s also important to note that having the ability to handle extreme heat means you will achieve the maximum amount of horsepower and torque with synthetic oil.

The industry standard for oil changes is every 3 months or 5,000km, however this is not the case with synthetic oil. Synthetic oil manufacturers recommend their oil be changed at various intervals, but almost all of them exceed 3 months or 5,000km. This means you can get longer life out of your oil and can sometimes cut your number of oil changes in half.

It’s important to note that some manufactures engines require synthetic oil be used. This is because of the engineering of their motor.
